That your petitioners frequently import large cargoes of quupowder from Europe and have at present heavy stocks on hand, which in consequence

of the before-mentioned conduct of the Customs officials they are unable to dispose of the Chinese "dealers refusing to purchase in face of the prohibition referred to. The consequence follows that serious loss falls upon all concerned in the quepowder hade of this colony and all... business in that article has been stopped. Your petitioners believe that if a remonstrance were

made by you Excellency to the seoppo of Cauton, the practice complaced of would be

discontinued.

Your petitioners therefore pray that your- Excellency may be pleased to make such - representations to the Chinese Government and adopt ouch other measures as may lead to determine the imperious interference of the Chinese Customs officials in the manner complained of. and to insure for the future the unuicterrupted trade in and transport of queporoder between Hong Mong, Macao, and the outlining pork.
